Key to Success

High IQ has been considered as the "be all and end all" of success for centuries.

But studies have shown that high EQ or emotional intelligence has a more important role. Personal management (self awareness and management) and social management (social awareness and relationship management on the other hand) have been the basic building blocks of success.

Like DNA as life's building block, emotional intelligence is the foundation of achievement and success in any field of endeavor.

In my practice, I've seen people with high IQ (but with low EQ) who drift from one job to the next. They can't seem to enjoy what they have. They've had conflicts and have created bad reputation anywhere they go.

Their inability to manage themselves and others have put their lives on hold. Too bad. Emotional and interpersonal skills can be learned.

While I've seen individuals with average IQ and yet with very high EQ have made a lot of progress. They've led despite criticisms. They've tried despite negativism. They've persisted despite failures. They've achieved and succeeded despite everything.

Emotional intelligence -- one of the keys to success.

Problem-Solving

"I am a problem-solver."

Hannah, my 8 y/o daughter, was firm when she read this line aloud from A 31-Day Positive Affirmations for Kids and Teens.

"Based on what you read, what are you gonna do if you have some concerns or problems?"

"Well Dad, first I will find out what the problem is."

"And then?"

"Then I will look for solutions. . ." She hesitated a bit. .

"And after that, I'll choose the best solution."

"Anything else?"

She placed her pointing finger on her forehead and was in a deep thought. She uttered, "I'll ask for help or advice. . . I'll ask help from Dad and Mom!"

With proper guidance and questions, even kids as young as Hannah can give us some problem-solving techniques.
