Empathy: This is What Separates Real Leaders from Pretenders

I've been watching CNN's coverage of Hurricane Katrina and I've seen too many 'politics' going on -- infighting, unnecessary heated arguments, miscommunications, blaming game, long and bright 'red tape', lack of leadership, inexperience.

Too many bad news to mention. I feel bad for those people who are caught in between . No food and water. No shelter. No hope.

And yet bickering continues. At the very least, they could have been more sensitive.

In these difficult times, how can we show empathy, especially to the victims?

First, be ready to listen and give your undivided attention.

2nd, let the person talk about concerns.

3rd, show that you care by giving simple necessities such as food, water, and blanket.

4th, give your support but don't give false hopes.

5th, if appropriate, give a hug.

6th, you may give suggestions but don't give advice.

7th, sincerely say soothing statements such as, "This is really hard. . . It must have been very difficult to cope with the loss. . .etc."

Empathy is what the victims are longing for. Empathy is what we should willingly give. Empathy is what we all need.
